About Sustainable Jersey
Sustainable New Jersey is a non-profit organization that provides a sustainability certification program for municipalities across the state. The program defines a holistic view of sustainability for New Jersey yet allows each municipality to prioritize and implement initiatives that are most important to them. Sustainable Jersey also provides tools, training and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue sustainability initiatives.
What is Sustainable New Jersey certification?
Sustainable Jersey certification is a prestigious designation for municipal governments in New Jersey. Municipalities that achieve the certification are considered by their peers, by state government and by the experts and civic organizations in New Jersey, to be among the leading municipalities. All actions taken by municipalities to score points toward certification must be accompanied by documentary evidence and is reviewed. The certification is free and completely voluntary.
Why is Sustainable New Jersey certification important for the Village?
Sustainability actions have long been a priority for Ridgewood. The Sustainable New Jersey certification provides an external benchmark for us to communicate not only our commitment to sustainability but also the breadth and impact of our initiatives.
As part of Sustainable New Jersey, we have access to much needed resources – education, outreach, technical assistance, subject matter experts as well as grant funding. Many of our initiatives have been shared with other municipalities. Some have been found to be the best in the state (shout out to our accomplishments in Recycling!) while others have been hailed for their innovative engagement (Ridgewood Project 1000 Acres).
What is the status of the Village's certification?
The Green Team and Green Ridgewood are responsible for Ridgewood’s certification. They have successfully led 2023 recertification attaining Bronze-level status, with a line of sight to achieving Silver in 2024!
